Private jet returns Kenith Bulford to Bermuda

Kenith Clifton Bulford

Kenith Clifton Bulford, the 29-year-old Bermudian who has been on the run from Police for almost two years, returned to the Island under a heavy Police presence this weekend on board a private jet.

Bulford is expected to appear in court this morning.

The 29-year-old was arrested during a house raid in the district capital Kingston in Jamaica late in January, bringing to an end a 22-month manhunt. Bulford skipped Police bail in June, 2003 and fled the Island.

In an eleventh hour Press conference yesterday afternoon, Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith said Bulford arrived in Bermuda at about 5.15 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

He said the Bermuda Police Service footed the bill for the private jet.

?We negotiated a one-off contract with a private airline firm because we were concerned about security issues,? he said. ?There are certain restrictions that apply to the conveying of individuals under these circumstances onboard commercial aircraft and weighing up all those considerations, we felt the most prudent thing to do was just to fly direct.?

Bulford was accompanied by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force as well as Bermuda Police Service officers.

Mr. Smith said Bulford?s arrest demonstrated the value of working in close co-operation with another jurisdiction, especially when it comes to issues like deportation.

He thanked the Jamaican Constabulary Force for their high level of co-operation.

On the question of the reward offered for Bulford?s arrest, Mr. Smith said no decision had been made on any reward payment at this point in time.

Mr. Smith could also not go into detail as to what Bulford would be charged with. He would only say that the details would be made known in court this morning.

?Because of immense publicity this individual has been afforded over the last two years, we needed to officially confirm his deportation, his transport to Bermuda and his arrest and detention here,? he said.
