Regiment soldiers arrested in Grenada

Bermuda Regiment Commanding Officer Eddie Lamb

Three Bermuda Regiment soldiers have been imprisoned in Grenada on drug and assault charges, The Royal Gazette has learned.

But speaking yesterday from the Caribbean island, where the Regiment has been assisting with repairs following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ivan, Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Eddie Lamb insisted the incidents were "relatively minor" and had not in any way undermined the "sterling work" of the vast majority of soldiers.

"During a routine drugs search of the 165 soldiers here in Grenada, two were found to be in possession of marijuana," he said.

"They both pleaded guilty to the charge and have been incarcerated for a period of 28 days each. The other incident involved an altercation between two male soldiers. The aggressor pleaded guilty to the charge of assault and has been sentenced to 56 days in prison in accordance with military regulations."

The three soldiers will serve part of their sentences in a Grenadian jail, before returning home with the Regiment on March 19 to serve the remainder at Warwick Camp.

"Apart from these minor infractions, the soldiers have been doing extremely well," Lt. Col. Lamb added.

"Everybody here has been extremely impressed with the work that has been done and I believe Bermuda should be extremely proud of these fine young men."

Premier Alex Scott and Home Affairs Minister Randy Horton are currently in Grenada inspecting the Regiment's work and meeting with local dignitaries.
