Teen ?acted like a maniac? trying to evade Police

A teenager ?acted like a maniac? trying to evade Police, running a series of red traffic lights on a motorbike, colliding with a Police car, and swerving into a pursuing Police motorcyclist during a late-night chase before he was finally apprehended, a court has heard.

Landscape worker Jiquon Marion Belboda, 17, of Ewing Street, Pembroke, has pleaded guilty to a string of motoring offences related to an incident on January 21 this year when he was spotted riding a motorbike and failing to stop at a red light in Church Street.

It was shortly after 1 a.m. when Belboda was first seen by a Police patrol going through a red traffic light, a court was told.

Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney said officers followed Belboda and put on the Police car?s flashing lights in order to get his attention. However, he continued to ride away, going through two more red traffic lights in the city before slowing down in Union Street.

But when the Police car stopped and the two officers got out to speak to Belboda, the teenager started the engine on his bike and quickly rode off again, striking the Police car as he did so.

In Plea Court details were revealed of a pursuit that continued through north Hamilton and on to North Shore Road as Police attempted to stop Belboda. At one point a Police motorcyclist pulled alongside Belboda, but Belboda swerved his bike into the Police officer?s machine and rode away.

A short time later he hit a Police car and fell to the ground. He was eventually arrested and searched where it was discovered he was carrying 1.18 grams of cannabis resin.

Belboda pleaded guilty to riding a bike that did not have a licence plate displayed, having no driver?s licence, no insurance, being in possession of cannabis, failing to stop when requested to do so by a Police officer, and driving in a dangerous manner.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told Belboda he had been ?acting like a maniac? and ordered a social enquiry report be made before he delivers a sentence on August 31.

Belboda?s bail was set at $2,000.
