Former top DJ Ron-I killed in crash in Florida
A popular radio personality from the late 1960s has died in a single vehicle accident in Florida.
Edison Ible, also known as Ron-I or Pappa Ronnie, a broadcaster for both ZBM and ZFB, was travelling south along I-95 outside Titusville, Florida, heading to Jacksonville at 2 a.m. driving a tractor trailer when the vehicle's right tireblew out causing the trailer to swerve right, then left.
It hit the guard rail and flipped on its side throwing Mr. Ible from the vehicle. A fire erupted soon after the crash, last Monday, destroying the tractor trailer.
The 64-year old's mother, Eleanor Dillas, spoke about her relationship with her son and told a few stories. She said her son was a carpenter by trade but worked part time at the radio stations.
"I started him off. I used to be a radio dispatcher. He used to love coming to the radio to see me work. He used to want to take more than my job. One day he came home and said 'I want to be a disc jockey mama'."
Ms Dillas explained at the time her son, who she called Eddie or Ed, worked at Bermuda Bakery and became very good at baking cakes and bread. She told her son in order to be on the radio, he would have to learn how to speak clearly and correctly.
"The next afternoon, I picked out pieces of the newspaper and was ready for him with my recorder and everything. He came in and I said, 'You said you want to be a disc jockey, come on boy'. He did very well", she said.
Asked if she wanted to give a tribute to her son, Ms Dillas said: "I would like to say this much, my son Ed and I were very close. I'm a big joker and he just picked up where I left off.
"We got along wonderful. We had a lovely family and a lovely relationship. I'm going to miss him. We're all going to miss him."
Mr. Ible was married to the former Maria Benn who passed away several years ago. They moved to Florida in the early nineties as a result of his wife's health.
Ms Dillas wanted people to know that her son was a good driver and was not asleep at the wheel as many people may think.
Mr. Ible attended Heron Bay Elementary School and Sandy's Secondary School. He is survived by his four children Eddie, Lisa, Edray and Pumpkin and his four siblings Linesene Caines, Eura, Kavin and Bussie Ible.
His body will be flown into Bermuda today and the family anticipate having the funeral tomorrow or Wednesday.
