How MPs reacted to the leadership change

PLP MPs who last night spoke to The Royal Gazette <$>said they were happy with the result and looked forward to the future.

Dale Butler, Minister for Community Affairs and Sport, would not reveal who he voted for. He said: “I would have been happy with any result. I’m very proud of the PLP tonight, we saw democracy at work.

What Bermudians don’t know and will probably not appreciate is that Alex Scott was a very effective leader and he really attempted to get things done. I think once Ewart Brown picks his team he will set very high standards for them as he has very high standards for himself. I don’t know if I’ll be a part of the group but I’d be delighted to continue.”

Government backbench MP George Scott<$>, a public supporter of Dr. Brown, described himself as “very happy”. He said the new Premier had “taken the lead and given us results”.

Backbench MP Terry Lister openly supported Dr. Brown. He said: “I’m a supporter of change and this represents change. It helps us to grow. I’m very excited about this and I believe that we are now in much, much better shape to win the next election.

“I have extreme confidence that we will now win by a very wide margin. Dr. Brown has an aggressive leadership style and that’s a good thing. He’s not a laidback person waiting for something to happen. He makes it happen.”

Backbench MP Dennis Lister <$>sat next to Dr. Brown during the crucial count. He said the extent of the support for the new PLP leader from delegates came as no surprise.

“I knew we had it. I have been part of the team working with Dr. Brown. We had done our homework talking to the delegates up and down the country.

“It’s important that we put in front a leader that has a vision for where we need to go, a leader that has proven he can take action. We had become stagnant. Now it’s about where do we go from here not only for today but for the future.”

Backbencher Glenn Blakeney<$> described Dr. Brown’s speech as “superb”. Asked about Alex Scott’s, he said that he had represented himself well.

He said that he had not spoken to Alex Scott but added: “He’s ok. It’s the party that’s made the decision and we are together.”

Senator David Burch said he was pleased the victory was clear cut. “I’m pleased that it’s a decisive victory so we have to pull together and move on.”

Asked if her would still have a job on Monday morning, the holder of the Works and Engineering as well as the Tourism portfolio said: “I have two jobs. I expect to have one.”

Outspoken backbencher Renee Webb<$> said Dr. Brown and Paula Cox would be an “excellent team”. She added: “They can work together - that’s politics.”

She said she was confident her bid to amend Human Rights legislation would be discussed more under the new regime compared to what happened under Mr. Scott’s leadership.

She said the UBP “did not stand a chance” at the next election with Dr. Brown in charge.
