Premier rallies east end PLP supporters
While last night generally saw cool temperatures over the Island, the atmosphere within the grounds of the St. George's Cricket Club was fired-up - the site of the latest PLP rally.
A massive showing - nearly 1,000 people - invaded Wellington Oval as candidates running in the General Election asked the country for another term in power amid anti-UBP and anti media sensation.
Premier Ewart Brown told the crowd: "On December 18 we need you to send us back to work because we want the job and because we believe we have earned the job."
Dr. Brown said the party was not done moving the country forward and he trumpeted the party's record on managing the economy, which the Premier declared as strong.
He continued: "Despite what some would have you believe, the state of our economy is strong!
"The state of our economy is envied around the world and most importantly, poised even with further growth.
"Why else would a $500 billion-dollar company say it's moving its domicile to Bermuda just as The Royal Gazette is proclaiming the death of international business?"
And he took direct aim at critics who he said claimed prior to the PLP's historic 1998 victory that "the lights would be turned out" if the party won power.
"Earlier this month, two mega London companies announced their move to Bermuda — on the same day; it seems to me, Dr. Gibbons that the lights are still on!
"The lights are still on and they're brighter than ever — let us not dim the progress — let us keep the momentum moving forward for Dr. Gibbons and for all other successful business people."
While portraying the Opposition United Bermuda Party as a party that opposes everything the PLP has done, he used Government TV as an example in a swipe at Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley.
Dr. Brown stated: "On CITV we have had programmes on it such as one that featured the Blue Waters Anglers Club; before the UBP even watched one program of CITV they called for its boycott.
"What does the (Opposition) leader have against black fishermen? I don't know. It's about them and us. They (UBP) have a cast of characters who we're sick and tired of."
Earlier that night, Lovitta Foggo, PLP candidate for St. David's said a vote for the UBP was a vote for slavery and a return to the plantation.
"We must hasten to employ measures which ensure that our people and our children know that a UBP vote is a vote back to the plantation. It is a vote that will return the shackles to our feet!
"It is a vote that will keep us as slaves because the UBP has one aim; to ensure we, the working class, the underprivileged, never get our fair share of that economic pie! "For the UBP, money and wealth is meant only for those that control the economy when slavery was alive and kicking and for the descendants that controls the economy today. Emancipate yourselves!"
