Brown fears Governor may be expanding role

Sen.Walton Brown

New Government Senator Walton Brown has questioned if the new Governor is trying to extend his reach over Bermuda's Constitution.

Sen. Brown said on Wednesday he was concerned about a statement made by new Governor Sir Richard Gozney at the end of the Throne Speech.

He asked if the new Governor was looking to extend his reach and become more actively involved in Bermuda's affairs than previous Governors.

At the end of the Throne Speech in early February Sir Richard said: "I look forward to working with the Government of Bermuda on international aspects of their policies across the board.

"These days international aspects often go wider than in the past. We have a common aim to see Bermuda remain at the front of the pack in the international financial services industry and in other areas.

"My wife and I have been here for less than two months and already we feel committed to these Islands, Islands of which we have quickly come to feel a part."

In his maiden speech, Sen. Brown said the Governor's comment, coupled with a view expressed by the UK Government last June that suggested Britain may be engaging in areas that may contravene existing constitutional norms and extend the role of the Governor, had given him cause for concern.

"It raises the question of the British Government assuming the right to be more actively involved here because of globalisation. Would not the reverse also be true?" he said.

"Would not the Bermuda Government also have the right to be more actively involved in the affairs of the UK?"
