Tips for crime prevention
Tools to arm yourself with:
The Bermuda Police Service Crime Prevention publish a Prevention Advisory every Christmas and these are a few of the tactics you can employ to avoid becoming a victim:
- Do not carry a lot of cash on you. Do not count your money in public.
- Do not use ATM machines when you are alone or at night to withdraw a large amount of money.
- Use debit cards instead of cash.
- Walk where there is good lighting and never walk alone.
- When walking appear confident and assertive it tends to discourage attackers.
- Do not make yourself a target by overburdening yourself with large or heavy packages.
- Stay Alert. Walkmans, iPods and other devices will limit your ability to stay alert.
In the event of a robbery:
- Comply with demands.
- Appear submissive and do not make any eye contact.
- Do not make any sudden movements and let the attacker know what you are doing at all times so they do not guess.
- Do not resist, argue or fight.
- If you are not involved in the robbery, keep away.
- Do not try and follow the person who robbed you.
- Call the Police as soon as it is safe and try and get names of witnesses who may not be able to wait for the Police.
- Write down as much detail about the attacker as possible.
