Astwood joins top court
judge on the Court of Appeal yesterday by Governor Lord Waddington.
Sir James will join the Hon. Mr. Justice Michael Dempster who was also sworn in during the brief ceremony at Government House.
After the ceremony Sir James told The Royal Gazette he was happy to come back to Bermuda's courts, and he was looking forward to serving his country to the best of his ability.
Last December the former Chief Justice was made a Knight Commander of the British Empire in the Queen's New Year's Honours List.
A graduate of the Berkeley Institute, Sir James spent 17 years of his legal career in the West Indies after graduating from Gray's Inn law school in England.
Between 1963 and 1974 he was resident Magistrate in Jamaica before returning home where he served as Senior Magistrate and Solicitor General and is credited with helping to Bermudianise the Magistrates' Court.
Joining Sir James in the Court of Appeal is the Hon. Mr. Justice Michael Kempster who was made a Commander of the British Empire last year. Mr. Justice Kempster was vice-president of the Hong Kong Supreme Court in 1993 and a Judge of the Supreme Court from 1982 to 1984. An Justice of Appeal e in Hong Kong from 1984 to 1993, He has also been Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Brunei since 1983.
Mr. Justice Kempster said he was looking forward to working in Bermuda and learning about its traditions.
Both men will join present Appeal Court judges President the Hon. Sir Denys Roberts, the Hon. Sir Alan Huggins, the Hon. Mr. Justice Harvey da Costa and the Hon. Mr. Justice P. Telford Georges who were reappointed until the end of the year.
