Canadian tourist dies after crash

taking the number of people killed on the Island's roads this year to nine.

The announcement that Harry Walter Hughes had died in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital came 24 hours after 32-year-old Brian Campbell was killed when his motorbike ploughed into a fire hydrant near Clearwater Beach in St. David's during the early hours of Sunday.

Mr. Hughes, 71, crashed into a car travelling eastbound on Malabar Road, Sandys Parish, just east of the Police Mess around 3.15 p.m. on Friday.

He was taken to hospital suffering from a perforated bowel. Following surgery, he succumbed to post-operative complications and died at 11.30 a.m. yesterday.

A Police spokeswoman said Mr. Hughes was travelling west when he appeared to lose control of his bike and collided with the offside of a car driven by a 66-year-old Sandys man.

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information about the accident to call P.c. Suzanne Steede on 234-1010.

Mr. Campbell, of Traveller's Lane, Pembroke, hit the fire hydrant shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday.

An ambulance crew from Clearwater rushed him to the hospital, but he was certified dead at 1.55 a.m. Friends said Mr. Campbell, who was single and worked for Federal Express, had a keen interest in fast motorbikes.

He was described as a clean-living inspirational figure who did not smoke or drink. Anyone with information about Mr. Campbell's death is asked to call P.c. Wesley Watson on 297-1122.
