Warwick West
Party's most stalwart MPs.
Warwick West incumbent the Hon. Sir John Sharpe suffered his first defeat after 30 years in the constituency at the hands of Progressive Labour Party newcomer Dr. Ewart Brown.
And although the loss was a slim one of 14 votes, it signalled the end of Sir John's political career and the beginning of Dr. Brown's fight to put the PLP in power.
"I expected to win a seat,'' said an elated Dr. Brown. "I did not expect that last count to be in favour of the UBP.
"We (Dr. Brown and his defeated running mate Mr. George Scott) worked hard together as a team. I'm disappointed that he did not get in.'' However, Dr. Brown, referring to an earlier statement that he had scores to settle and accounts to pull even, said he was happy that "one obscure statement'' did not stop him from winning.
"I think that one of the scores has been settled. The Bermudian voter is interested in some of the things I have to say.
"And I will work hard until the PLP is Government of this Island.'' But both Sir John and veteran Warwick West MP the Hon. Quinton Edness made it clear that they would not make it easy for the PLP.
Sir John, who admitted he was disappointed with losing by just 14 votes, thanked the people of Warwick West and promised to continue working behind the scenes for them.
He said he will also be working to find someone to take his place. Mr. Edness, who called his victory and the UBP's bittersweet, said: "We're going to continue working hard and will work to get our seats back''.
He attributed Sir John's slight loss to the mood of the constituency on days leading up to the election.
"If we held it a week ago, this would have been a success,'' Mr. Edness said.
Noting that they represented a constituency hit hard by the recession, drugs and crime, Mr. Edness also said: "There are some thing we have to put right.
We have to continue to listen''.
Mr. Scott attributed his loss to employers not giving some staff enough time off to vote.
The National Liberal Party's Mrs. Dessaline Waldron said she was not disappointed with the votes she received. She called it a "learning'' experience and said she would think about running again.
Independent Mr. David Burch, who also said he was running for experience and not necessarily to win, said he would remain involved in politics.
