'Bermuda will never see another Julian Hall'

Tributes from political leaders and musical performers were overflowing at a four hour Celebration of Life service for Julian Hall on Saturday.

Hundreds attended the Service at the New Testament Church of God Heritage Worship Centre on Union Street to remember Mr. Hall who was well known for his intellect, eloquence and panache.

Mr. Hall who was a Progressive Labour Party MP and lawyer died on July 18 after a lengthy illness.

Among the many to speak was Dr. Brown, who described his good friend as a: "A man of razor sharp intellect. He was an unafraid warrior for justice. In the courtroom he was simply a master."

"Some here remarked that he was too big for Bermuda. But to suggest that he was too big is to suggest that he should have reshaped his character."

He added that he was immensely proud his Government repealed the Bermuda Bar Amendment which had prohibited Mr. Hall from practising law: "Sometimes we have the opportunity to right wrongs. This Government righted a wrong done to him and repealed an unjust law."

Works and Engineering Minister Derrick Burgess, who Mr. Hall worked for as a legal consultant for the last several years, spoke of Mr. Hall's eloquence: "England has Winston Churchill. Cuba has Fidel Castro and the U.S. has Martin Luther King. Julian Hall was Bermuda's great orator."

Minister of Health and Energy Michael Scott, who went to Mount Allison University with Mr. Hall and worked with him as a lawyer in Bermuda spoke of the his admiration for Mr. Hall: "He was my life long friend. He was my brother. I looked to him for friendship and I looked to him for leadership."

Former Premier Alex Scott spoke of Mr. Hall's legal advocacy and said he "spoke for down trodden people" and said "Bermuda will never see another Julian Hall".

Tributes were also paid by Opposition Leader Kim Swan, Rod Attride-Stirling, Charles Richardson, Gary Jollymore, Donal Smith, Dr. Clarence Terceira, his nephew Lyniko Hall, daughter Nadia Hall and sister Debra Benton.

The service also saw the congregation giving standing ovations after several musical performances. Those who performed included Toni Robinson, Gita Blakeney-Saltus, Maria Burgess, Sheila Smith and a video presentation by David Durham which showed clips of some of Mr. Hall's most famous speeches.

Mr. Hall is survived by his three daughters Nadia, Liana and Claudia as well as his parents Cecilia and Lynn Hall, his sisters Judith Hall-Bean and Debra Benton, his brother Lynn Hall Jr. and the mother of his children Isabella Hall (Charles).
