A Boys' Brigade troop makes its way to St. Paul's Anglican Church.

As the Bermuda Chapter of the Boys' Brigade (BB) prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary, an appeal has been made for adults to get involved.

BB Captain David Semos is hoping that former members will respond to his call, as the organisation has a shortage of leaders at present.

A Christian-based programme designed for boys between the ages of five and 18, BB was introduced to Bermuda in 1960.

The Island's founding member Cecil Downs is still involved with the association. He began the programme here at the request of Rector Peter Evans of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Paget.

His request was based on the success the programme had seen since it was started in Glasgow, Scotland in 1883 by Lieutenant (Sir) William Smith. His idea was to combine drill and discipline with fun activities, life skills and trade.

Sir William incorporated that package with Christian values, and introduced it to his local Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The organisation badge is an anchor. Its motto, 'sure and steadfast', was taken from the Bible, from Hebrews 6:19 which reads:. "Which hope we have as a an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast".

According to Mr. Semos, the aim of the organisation is, "the advancement of Christ's Kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness" – values BB has worked to instill in young men on the Island since it was first introduced here.

As well, he said, BB develops a boy's awareness of his own community and creates opportunity for service. "We have our meetings on Friday nights and there we do a variety of fun activities which are tailored to reach the need of our targeted group.

"Last Friday night for example, we worked on rebuilding a Myers Water Pump and we painted the church hall.

"There are many projects and activities that we do with the kids, depending on their ages we also get them involved in computer projects and at times they play computer games."

He said these activities are new additions to standard activities such as outdoor adventures and arts and crafts. The organisation operates as part of St. Paul's Church, and is staffed by unpaid officers.

It operates as a company, and is split into groups based on age.

The Bermuda chapter will be celebrate its 125th anniversary on November 15, with a dinner in the church hall.

"We would like to get all of the old members and leaders to come out and support us," said Mr. Semos.

"If they have any photographs, memories or paraphernalia of their time with the brigade we would like for them to bring them as well.

"Every one is invited to come out and have a good time with us as we celebrate this occasion."

Dinner tickets are $10 for children and $15 for adults.

For more information telephone Mr. Semos on 236- 9343 or 334- 9349.
