Don't feed the chickens or cats at the airport

Warning: A jet arrives at the airport. The airport management has requested that the public do not feed feral chickens and cats near the airport.

The public has been asked not to feed wild chickens and cats living at the L.F. Wade International Airport.

According to a Government spokesperson, members of the public have set up cat feeding stations at the airport which chickens are also eating from increasing the number of animals.

Airport General Manager Aaron Adderley called for this to stop and said: "We have a duty to maintain the safety of all air passengers at L.F. Wade and wild life and birds can create a particular hazard to aircraft arriving and departing Bermuda.

"We do our best to keep the wildlife under control here at the airport, but the continual feeding of chickens and cats by the public, makes this job difficult."

Chickens, cats and other wild animals have wandered on to the airport runway and taxiways creating a safety hazards for aeroplanes and passengers, he said.

There is also a health risk for passengers and airport employees because these animals are known to carry diseases.

The Department of Airport Operations has asked the public to remove the feeding stations and discontinue feeding the animals on the airport property and near the airport.
