Extra Police out for Halloween

Police monitor Front Street on Halloween, 2004.

Seventy additional Police officers will be on patrol tonight to ensure the public is safe during Halloween.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Superintendent Mike Jackman said although the Bermuda Police Service wishes a safe and fun night to everyone participating in the festivities, it is also keeping an eye on those who plan to use the holiday to commit illegal activities.

Officers will be on buses and there will be no tolerance for those who wish to participate in anti-social behaviour, he said.

Supt. Jackman explained there will be 70-plus extra officers on duty along with those already scheduled to work tonight. The increased deployment will include high-visibility patrols throughout the day and evening

"The objective will be to minimise damage to property and injury to persons while also providing a rapid and effective response to incidents. To this end, the BPS will have a zero tolerance approach towards persons who engage in unlawful behaviour," the Superintendent said.

Supt. Jackman said the Service is asking parents, shopkeepers and gas station owners and operators to watch out for people, especially young people, attempting to buy large amounts of eggs and/or gasoline.

He added: "Though you may consider them as everyday items, historically they have been used as missiles or weapons towards Police, members of the public and property."

Supt. Jackman explained gasoline can be used to make molotov cocktails even though the use of them has declined over the past few years.

The Service is encouraging parents to dress their children in brightly-coloured clothing and to use flashlights after dark. Young children should be accompanied by a responsible adult while 'trick or treating'.

Supt. Jackman also reminded the public not to drink and drive as there will be a no tolerance approach for the offence.

Officers will be highly visible in certain areas with extra officers at each Police Station. However, the biggest Police presence will be in the City of Hamilton because of the many parties taking place there.
