Hamilton Parish woman imprisoned for importing cannabis
A Hamilton Parish woman was given a five-month prison sentence after she admitted importing more than $21,000 worth of marijuana.
Angelica Carter was charged in Magistrates' Court on Thursday with the importation of 422.9 grams of marijuana.
Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess said Customs officers at L.F. Wade International Airport discovered the drugs hidden in Carter's underwear and inside her body on May 31.
Carter, 22, returned to the Island on a flight from Atlanta, and was randomly selected by Customs for a search.
Officers searching her bags noted she was nervous and a Police sniffer dog showed interest in her.
When Customs officers requested a personal search, Carter asked to use the bathroom, claiming she was menstruating.
The officers asked if she was carrying drugs and Carter nodded and began to cry.
Ms Burgess said officers found the marijuana in three separate packages one underneath Carter's bra, another between two pairs of underwear, and a third in a condom inside her vagina. The drugs had a street value of $21,145.
When interviewed by Police, Carter said she was offered $5,000 for importing the drugs to the Island.
Defence lawyer Shade Subair called the incident "an obvious case of young and dumb".
"This is a situation where a 22-year-old female links up with an older man with whom she had an intimate relationship, and he succeeded in convincing her to participate in this idiotic operation," she said.
According to Ms Subair, as soon as Carter was caught, she began to cooperate with Police, and was helpful in continuing investigations.
The lawyer added that her client deeply regretted bringing drugs to the Island, saying: "This has been a devastating experience for her."
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner substantially discounted Carter's sentence because of her willingness to cooperate with the Police.
"It has not been disputed that she has cooperated to the hilt, and is willing to continue to do so," said Mr. Warner.
