Veteran Bermuda Marathon Derby participants are planning to give it another go.

This time however they're running for a cause Age Concern.

Archie Tucker, who ran his first May 24 race when he was 21 years old, will run again at the age of 86 alongside his brother Lee Tucker, 74.

Archie suffers from Alzheimer's disease in addition to hearing problems, so his brother agreed to train with him and run alongside him.

The pair were due to run last year until Archie suffered an injury a few weeks before the race.

They decided to go for the glory this year and have spent the past 12 months in training. According to Lee they are ready for Monday.

"We usually train nine miles a day a four-mile run on Horseshoe Bay beach each morning and a five-mile walk in the afternoon," he said.

"On Thursday we both ran nine-and-a-half miles."

Lee said that they both have competed multiple times in the race over the years, but this year the goal is to just finish the race.

"We have been given permission to start the race earlier than the usual start time of 9 a.m. and will start the race at 8 a.m.

"Since we both have run many times in the race, we both know the fulfillment we feel after completing the race, with the crowd cheering us on and encouraging us. We may not be the fastest but we do plan to finish."

Lee ran his first race in 1944 and later went on to train several winners of the annual half marathon.

"Archie finished participating in the late 1940s then he started to train people like Ed Sherlock, Max Smith Jr., Josh DeSilva and Wyclef Williams they were all outstanding winners or runners-up.

"In 1978 he started running again and he has been competing off and on ever since," he said.

Lee and Archie are also well known taxi operators.

"Archie is one of the oldest taxi drivers on the Island, he started in the 1950s. He also worked as a hotel operator," said Lee who was once the voice for the Bermuda Taxi Owners' Association.

In recent years, Lee said Archie has run to support charities, selecting those he has an affiliation with like the Alzheimer's Organisation, which he ran for in the past.

This year they have decided to run in support of Age Concern.

"We are asking all those who want to contribute to send their donations to Age Concern as we are running for that cause," Lee said.
