Head Police investigator answers key questions on the double murder case
Superintendent Antoine Daniels headed the investigation into the murders of Maxwell Brangman and Frederick Gilbert. In an interview with The Royal Gazette, he answered some of the questions raised by the case against Darronte Dill.
Q: The prosecution told the jury it's likely Dill did not act alone. The defence suggested that Roger Lightbourne Sr. and Roger Lightbourne Jr. may also have been involved in the murders. Why were they not put on trial?
A: "The obvious reason is no evidence against them. It doesn't mean they can't be charged in the future. We didn't want to charge them and risk losing them all when we didn't have the appropriate evidence."
Q: Why did "Mr. X" the witness who claimed to have seen Roger Lightbourne Sr. attack Mr. Brangman that night make that allegation to the Police when it is now believed to be false?
A: "All I can say is the witness didn't come up to proof. It's somebody that came forward that made something up. My personal view is they probably thought they was going to get some money."
Q: The court heard allegations that Darronte Dill and the Lightbournes are members of the Parkside Crew. We also heard how Roger Lightbourne Sr. told the Police that Dill was a footsoldier who had to kill to be accepted. Are the Police concerned that gangs are attacking homeless people as part of an initiation rite?
A: "You've got to remember the suspect (Darronte Dill) is a member of Parkside. These gang rituals sometimes to get into gangs you have to kill or assault somebody. They (the perpetrators of the murder) was going around to find someone to kill."
Q: Have other people been killed by gangs as part of an initiation ritual?
A: "Not really. Not as part of gang rituals, but as part of gang behaviour as recent shootings have shown."
Q: What about St. Claire McDonald Augustus, the missing man whose burned body was discovered following a fire in a derelict cottage in Hamilton on April 6, 2008? A murder investigation was launched into that death. Was it linked to this?
A: "I don't know if there's a link. It might be some of the same individuals involved. I don't think it's a link that they went around killing homeless people."
