Improved GCSE pass results recorded by private schools

Private schools across the Island have released their GCSE exam results with Warwick Academy coming out on top with its best set of results.

The school had a pass rate of 89 percent, four percent higher than last year, and compared to an 85 percent pass rate for Bermuda High School for Girls and a 79 percent rate for Saltus.

Maggie McCorkell, head teacher said: "Our I/GCSE results this year were excellent, the best we have had. We had 62 students who sat the exams and 89 percent gained passes of A* to C in five and more subjects.

"In all cases these included English and Mathematics and the majority of the students took eight or nine subjects. As a school we are obviously delighted with these."

Mrs. McCorkell said students with the best grades were Alexander Brown (4A*, 5A), Seth Wilson (5A*, 3A) and Tyler Balcombe (4A*, 3A, 1B and 1C).

Bermuda High School for Girls followed with an 85.52 percent pass rate with one student, Caitlin O'Doherty receiving eight A* and one A. Forty students sat exams at BHS.

Head teacher Linda Parker was pleased with the results and said: "I am pleased to report that our GCSE/IGCSE results are even better than those last year. Considering that BHS is a non-selective school that accepts students with a wide range of abilities, these results are excellent."

Last year, the pass rate for A* to A was 31.94 percent and this year the pass rate was 40.95 percent.

Students with the best results in addition to Caitlin include Katie Cusumano (7A*, 2A), Emma Knight (6A*, 3A), Mariangela Bucci (6A*, 2A, 1B), Riann Ming (5A*, 4A), Chloe Brookes (5A*, 3A, 1B), Madeleine Fox (4A*, 4A, 1B) and Adrienne Miller (3A*, 6A).

Mrs. Parker added: "All of the students and teachers are to be congratulated on these excellent results. I am especially happy over the increased number of A*s and As, this year. Overall, it does not appear that the 6.30 a.m. start for the students to write the exams negatively impacted their grades."

Last year, students were required to sit their exams at 6.30 a.m. in order to take them at the same time as pupils in Britain.

Saltus students achieved a 79 percent pass rate at the A* to C grade range. Twenty-nine students gained A* to C passes in nine of more subjects. Seventy-one students sat the exam this year.

Last year, 65 students took the exam and the pass rate was 69 percent at the A* to C grade range.

Deputy Headmaster Malcolm Durrant said: "Our particular congratulations go to Matthew Hogan with six A* grades and four A grades, to Daniel Andrade with four A* grades, four A grades and one B grade, to Ryan Benevides with three A* grades, four A grades and two B grades, and to Eoin McMahon with three A* grades, four A grades and two B grades."

This newspaper was unable to obtain the GCSE results for the two public senior schools, CedarBridge Academy and Berkeley Institute despite requests.
