Land-holding charges may be increased for non-Bermudians
Land-holding charges for non-Bermudians buying homes are to be set at 25 percent under a new law.
Ownership of condominiums will bring with it an 18 percent charge on the value of the land.
Any other land brings with it a five percent land-holding charge.
Government tabled the Bermuda Immigration and Protection (Land-Holding Charges) Regulations 2009 in the House of Assembly on Friday.
The Bill states there will be zero charges for Bermudian, married couples or spouses, children or parents of Bermudians.
The increased charges will apply to non-Bermudians obtaining property other than through "devise, inheritance or voluntary conveyance".
People buying tourist accommodation either a hotel suite, condo or fractional unit, without land valuation assessment numbers will pay ten percent of the land value on first disposition from the developer, or 18 percent afterwards.
For hotel residences condos or hotel units with individual land valuation assessment numbers if they are placed on the hotel inventory it will cost 18 percent, or 25 percent if the property is kept for private use.
