London puts on its 'Bermuda shorts' but can it pull them off?
A Bermudian cultural norm is raising eyebrows in London.
Bermudian-style shorts as office attire are causing a stir as the Island staple has been highlighted in an article in the online version of the UK broadsheet, The Daily Telegraph, entitled: "Shorts suits: Would you wear this to work?"
In the article by Robert Colvile, the author shares his excitement over a "new" clothing option as the months get warmer.
The article stated that, in London, only 24 percent of office workers are now required to wear a business suit, compared with 37 percent just four years ago. Mr. Colvile believes compulsory dress codes could be dead within a decade and some young men are welcoming the casual alternative.
He finds his biggest obstacle to wearing the shorts are women who work with him who make comments like: "Are you sure you have the knees for that?" and "men never really look good in shorts".
But his male friend tells him to pay the girls no attention. "If men said to women, 'No, you can't wear that because I find it unattractive', they would see it as really offensive."
These Bermuda-style shorts may not be fully embraced in London, but it's safe to say Bermuda shorts won't be out of style here any time soon.
