Man given suspended sentence for injuring policeman
A 23-year-old who fractured an officer's wrist as he sped past Police on his motorbike was yesterday fined and handed a suspended sentence.
Rodney Grimes admitted the offence in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
The Southampton resident admitted he failed to stop for Police and driving in a manner dangerous, reckless or furious.
He said he did it to avoid being arrested for traffic warrants.
Crown counsel Larissa Burgess said Police were performing weapons searches outside Parkside Restaurant in Pembroke on September 24.
At around 8.55 p.m., officers saw Grimes riding east on Parsons Road and attempted to stop him. Instead of slowing, Grimes accelerated.
Ms Burgess said Grimes steered towards two officers trying to stop him, forcing them to take evasive manoeuvres.
One officer escaped uninjured however the other's hand struck the motorcycle, fracturing his wrist. Police eventually stopped Grimes near Orange Valley where he apologised for failing to stop.
Yesterday he admitted failing to stop and driving dangerously, but said he wasn't responsible for injuring the officer.
"When the officer broke his hand, it wasn't because of anything I done," Grimes said. "He smashed his flashlight into my bike and that is how he injured his hand."
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner disagreed.
"These Police officers were doing their job," he said. "All they did was attempt to stop you. You clearly had no intention of stopping.
"This is a matter that you should go to prison for."
Mr. Warner sentenced Grimes to three months' imprisonment for reckless driving. He suspended the sentence for 24 months.
He also fined Grimes $750 for reckless driving and $250 for failing to stop for Police and awarded him five demerit points.
