Police had to help impaired driver to stand up

A man twice over the limit drove down a stretch of the Railway Trail as he fled from Police, a court heard.

Dunn O'Mara, 38, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and dangerous driving.

He also admitted speeding at 90 kph, failing to stop for Police and using a section of the Railway Trail.

Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told Magistrates' Court Police officers clocked O'Mara's Volkswagen as they conducted speed checks in Middle Road, Sandys, at 2 a.m. on June 20.

"They saw a motor car, a white Volkswagen, heading west at 90 kilometres per hour," said Mr. Mahoney.

"It continued at speed, failing to stop for the orange light of the officer."

O'Mara then diverted through several streets, failing to obey various stop lights, stop signs and junctions. He even drove down the section of the Railway Trail at Sound View Drive.

"He went along the railway path, ignoring stop signs, and officers radioed for assistance and continued following him to West Side Road," said Mr. Mahoney.

O'Mara then doubled back, past the original speed check and made a U-turn "on the golf course" before heading to Spring Benny Road.

Mr. Mahoney said: "He jumped out of the vehicle and then over a railing into a 15-foot drop. He was caught at this location. He could not stand unsupported and his speech was very slurred."

Asked if he had been drinking, O'Mara told officers: "Yes, I'm drunk."

A breath test showed 161 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, the legal limit being 80.

He told the court: "I just kind of stressed out going through some problems with my girlfriend. It wasn't like me, I just lost my head. I'm sorry, it will never happen again."

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told him: "You could have lost your life, or taken someone else's life."

Mr. Tokunbo fined O'Mara $2,750, banned him from driving for one year and imposed 30 points on his licence.
