Students raise $1,600 to protect Bluebirds
After learning about Bermuda's bluebird, primary one students at Saltus Grammar School raised more than $1,600 to help protect them
The 88 students visited the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo where they listened to lectures by the Bermuda Audubon Society and learnt how the bird has many predators and finds it hard to make safe nests. The students also recorded how many bluebirds they saw every day versus how many predators they saw.
Teacher Emma Lae said: "The S1s and their teachers decided to help the Bermuda Audubon Society build bluebird boxes and protect endangered birds in Bermuda. They also asked family members to pledge money for each bird they saw and counted. Some children, like Eliza Withers-Clarke, Alyssa DeSilva and Rebecca Davidson, also raised money to help Bermuda's endangered birds by selling drinks and popcorn in their neighbourhoods; others collected pledges for picking up trash.
"In total we raised $1,659.95 — an amazing amount for just 88 children!"
