Police seized 45 cannabis plants from land at Crown Hill Lane, Devonshire, yesterday afternoon.

Officers from the Police Support Unit visited the scene, located behind a boarded-up house, as the result of a tip-off.

Acting Sergeant Nigel Gittens said: "Police were on patrol when they had cause to check the grassy area, and discovered the plants. The land is an extension of a rented property. The plants were at varying stages of growth."

Around eight officers who attended the scene from 4 p.m worked to pull the plants out of the ground. They documented the crop before placing the plants into trash bags which were handed over to the narcotics department.

A/Sgt. Gittens said no arrests had been made and inquiries were ongoing to find out who owns the land and who was responsible for cultivating the plants.

The bust was the third of its kind since mid-August. On September 9, fifteen cannabis plants were seized from land on Cochrane Road in Somerset. As with yesterday's plantation, the crop was growing on land surrounded by bushes. Three weeks before that, 18 plants were removed from a residence in Curving Avenue, Pembroke.

Both of those operations also stemmed from tip-offs to the Police, with spokesman Dwayne Caines saying yesterday: "One of the things we are excited about is people in the community are now coming to the Police with specific information. This is the third seizure of home-grown marijuana where people in the community have responded with information. If you see someone acting suspiciously such as watering and nurturing plants and you know it to be nefarious, then please contact the Police. Marijuana is illegal and it leads to illegal activity."
