Update: 330 homes without power as Belco crews work flat out
Around 330 homes remained without power this morning, after Belco teams managed to reconnect almost 1,000 others yesterday and overnight.
However, the electricity company warned that some customers affected by Hurricane Igor may remain without power through the weekend.
Spokeswoman Susan McGrath-Smith said: "Belco wishes to advise customers who have power that their power may briefly go out, as switching is done to bring other customers back online. This is a necessary part of the restoration process in some cases.
"We expect that power will be restored to the majority of customers by the start of the weekend, but some customers may be without power through the weekend, as crews work on the smallest pockets of customers and on individual-customer jobs."
She added: "We understand that this is difficult for the customers who remain without power and we thank them for their patience, as our crews work to restore power Island-wide."
She said 140 customers in the East End and 140 customers in the West end remained withour power, while 50 homes in the central parishes were also waiting to be switched back on.
Work is planned today in the following areas:
Pearmans Hill
North Shore, Hamilton Parish
Penno's Drive
Loyal Hill Pass
Watlington Road East
Jennings Road
Bostock Hill
Chapel of Ease
Tee Street
DeSilva Close
Wellington Back Road
Hermitage Road
A total of 28,700 Belco customers experienced outages as a result of the hurricane. Most were reconnected within a couple of days. However, among those in the dark for more than four days was the household of Diana Ehlers, of Scenic Heights Lane, Southampton, which contains three sets of young twins.
Ms Ehlers was born and raised in Bermuda and is back visiting from her home in Oklahoma. Her house was plunged into blackout at 9.07 a.m on Sunday and power was not restored until around 7.30 p.m yesterday.
The rest of the eleven members of the household affected were her son Tim, 47, daughter, Kris Frantz, Kris's husband Darin Frantz and their three sets of twins Jesse and Jacob, 15, Braeden and Brock, 13, and Ian and Ali, seven. Also staying in the house were Darin's parents Vern and Barbara, from Kansas.
"My son-in-law has never been through a hurricane. He's used to electricity for his i-Phone and Internet," said Ms Ehlers. "My son-in-law would have gone home as soon as he heard about it but his mum and dad wanted to stay."
The family did their best to keep themselves entertained during the power cut.
"The twins sat around the table and played games. We played indoor marbles, the younger ones played little ones' games and they used their imaginations," she said.
Ms Ehlers, 71, has had both knees replaced and her son Tim, 47, was brain damaged at birth. She said she was "annoyed" and "frustrated" when Belco took down a faulty transformer on Monday, but did not replace it until yesterday evening.
"I felt like everyone else had electricity but when I saw those men arrive I could have kissed them. I was so happy! We had waited a long time and they were so nice, I couldn't be upset with them any more," she said.
Meanwhile, Cablevision advised subscribers yesterday that it had full restored its main line plant following the damage caused by Hurricane Igor.
General Manager Terry Roberson said: "I would like to thank our staff who have worked so tirelessly over the last 72 hours, in cooperation with Belco, to ensure that we are up and running again as soon as possible.
"We are now focusing our efforts on resolving service issues being experienced in individual homes. We ask that customers who have not yet reported outages to us to do so by calling 292-5544. I would like to thank our customers in advance for their patience and understanding as we complete this work."
Mr. Roberson added: "I would also like to remind our customers that once your power has been restored and has been stabilised, you can reconnect your cable equipment and the display on the converter box should come up with the current time.
"If it does not, please make sure that the cables have been properly reconnected. If the clock comes on and you are still unable to obtain a picture, please ensure that your television is tuned to channel three."
