Utility pole damages roof in St. David's
St. George's and St. David's came out of Hurricane Igor largely unscathed – except for one house.
At the junction of Texas Road and St. Luke's Road, the Pitcher home saw a utility pole come crashing down on their roof. And another pole crashed into the road leaving live wires dangling all over the road.
Chris Pitcher said: "The pole fell at roughly 5.30 a.m. when the wind changed direction. When the wind changed from the west, this is when it blew on this side of the house."
Asked about the damage, Mr. Pitcher said: "Oil is leaking into the tank. That's got to get cleaned out and everything. There's a hole in the roof.
"Hopefully we can get it out before the rain comes."
Mr. Pitcher said Belco had come to scene and cut away a large wire and were due to return later to remove the pole.
"They have to pull it off of the roof top.
"I guess they are trying to see what else is going on."
Meanwhile, St. George's Club, which had 72 guests at the hotel, was without power for more than 24 hours during the storm.
The front desk reservation manager, who didn't want to be named, said last night: "We have Belco on site now so something went wrong somewhere. They are working on the property. We don't have a generator.
"We saw quite a few of the transformers below on fire so I can see why we didn't have lights. Belco has really been working."
She continued: "We supplied the guests with water, candles, matches and bags of ice.
"Yesterday we had the restaurant open and we were serving sandwiches. A lot of guests are barbecuing."
The assistant general manager Latecia Denbrook said: "Right now, we are accommodating the guests as best we can. We gave them candles and water and ice.
"We didn't have that much structural damage. We have been without power since 11.40 a.m. Sunday."
She continued: "We're just waiting for electricity. The cottages are fully equipped so most of them bought their own food but it's trying to keep it.
"We're going to give them barbecues and we just pray the lights come on soon."
