Woman blames co-accused for alleged attack on girl
A woman on trial for allegedly beating a teenager with a stick yesterday put the blame on her co-accused and former friend.
Garrina Cann admitted getting into an altercation with Brittany Symonds, but told a Supreme Court Jury she never hit the 17-year-old.
She claimed she saw her co-defendant, Trimeia Roland, jump on Miss Symonds' back and hit her with a bottle.
Roland had blood on her shirt, arms and face after the attack, she also alleged.
Cann, 21, and Roland, 22, deny wounding Miss Symonds with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The teenager needed ten stitches and four staples in her head as a result of the alleged attack.
She also required two stitches in her upper back and three in her left thumb after the February 2 incident.
The court heard Miss Symonds was attacked by Cann and Roland after refusing to hand over her cell phone.
Cann, of Pembroke, said she lived on Sofar Lane in St. David's at the time of the incident with her friend Tyneisha O'Connor's family.
She said on the night in question there were people at the house for Miss O'Connor's birthday party including Roland, Jewels Fox, Keva Outerbridge and Marcus Fox.
Cann said she went to the bedroom to get her iPod to play music and noticed it was missing and assumed Miss Outerbridge and taken it.
She said she "got upset" and asked Miss O'Connor to call Miss Fox and Miss Outerbridge to find out if they had the iPod.
Cann told the court she wasn't able to reach either of the girls so she walked over to Mount Road with Roland and Mr. Fox to see if they were in the area.
She said she had nothing in her hands but Roland had a blue WKD bottle.
"I walked down Mount Road, looked right and didn't see anyone and looked left and I didn't see anyone until I saw a phone light. I called out 'Keva, Keva' and started walking that way."
Cann said when she got closer, she realised the person was Miss Symonds and overheard her having a conversation with Miss Outerbridge on the phone.
"I told her 'stop acting stupid and let me speak to Keva'. I reached for her phone. When I reached for the phone, she slapped my hands away and pushed me. I stumbled to the ground. I didn't fall, fall, I fell to my knee.
"I got off the ground and pushed her. She pushed me. She pushed me to the ground and I got vexed. I thought we were cool. She was acting like I was an enemy. She slapped me in my face. I hit her back."
Cann told the court she walked away from Miss Symonds when she saw Roland.
"I saw Trimeia with the bottle and she missed Brittany three times. She swung like three times. Brittany must have saw her coming so she ducked and kept walking.
"I felt if she could go on bad with me, she's big and bad enough to deal with her own situation."
The witness continued: "She [Roland] tried to jump on Brittany's back. She was trying to get up and swung the bottle at her head. I kept walking."
She said the next time she saw Roland, she came up to her holding a jagged bottle neck.
"Trimeia started saying what she did and I said I didn't want to hear it. She was saying 'I got that bitch'. She had blood on her shirt and her arms and her face. She had splatters on her face."
Cann said she was arrested the next day. She admitted she lied to Police about not knowing Roland to protect her; that Roland wanted to regain custody of her young son from Family Services.
Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess suggested Cann was lying more than she had admitted.
"I suggest to you today that this is a concocted story based on bits of evidence you have heard today. I am suggesting it's all a concocted story on your behalf."
Cann said it wasn't true.
The trial continues.
