Arrest made in recent –St. George's crime spree

Thieves targeted the Town of St. George last week, breaking into nearly a dozen businesses in just a few days.

Police reported ten incidents in and around the town.

A man is now in custody and expected to appear in court "in the near future", a Police spokesperson stated.

Officers on patrol last Wednesday discovered Eve's Cycle Ltd. on Water Street had been burgled and a blue IQT motorcycle, licence D823, was stolen.

Other incidents are said to have occurred at Robertson's Drug Store, Dowling's Shell Marine, the English Sports Shop and East End Flower Alley.

Police yesterday would not confirm what, if anything, had been taken.

Head of the East End Division of the Chamber of Commerce Kirby Brackstone said that store owners were "understandably upset" by the series of crimes.

"We're upset and we're frustrated," Mr. Brackstone said. "We don't need to be labelled as a high-crime area right now with all the other economic issues that we're facing."

Business owners had met with Police after the incidents he added. "The Police are working diligently. Part of the problem is that the community need to report crimes. The businesses do what they can, but these crimes are happening at night."

Following the incidents, several St. George's businesses are pushing for more closed circuit cameras around the town.

"They won't stop crime, but they might discourage it a bit," said Mr. Brackstone.

An employee of East End Flower Alley said that someone broke a pane of glass in a side door in an attempt to break in on Wednesday night, but the would-be intruder was stopped by a deadbolt. Nothing was reported stolen from the store.

Efforts have been made to improve security following the incident.

"We have installed technology at the highest level," said the employee. "We're wired and armed."
