Homes, vehicles damaged after tornadoes strike
A tornado tore through Southampton yesterday, causing damage to homes and vehicles.
According to reports, just after 2.30 p.m. a tornado landed near Southampton Rangers Sports Club, and moved North over the Island. Several homes were damaged by the storm, which tore the branches off trees and shattered at least one vehicles windshield.
Rangers Sports Club President Randy Raynor said the storm twisted several of the clubs lights, and bent a fence at a 45 degree angle.
"It'll probably cost about $8,000 to $10,000 to repair," he said. "We're having somebody come by tomorrow to look at it. Hopefully, we'll get the club ready to go for the double header on Sunday.
"We've been trying to improve the place, but every time something comes up. We'll weather the twister, or the hurricane, or the storm."
Meteorologist Nicholas Camicci from the Bermuda Weather Service said that the tornado activity was a surprise.
"It was a very odd situation," he said. "It wasn't really predicted. We've had several reports of damage on the Island and quite a few sightings. Most of the activity was reported in Tucker's Town and in the Southampton Rangers, Horseshoe Bay area."
Eleanor Brangman, said the tornado came and went in seconds. "It came so fast, we couldn't even get up," she said. "We came outside and there were pieces of the roof on the ground and all the plants were thrown about. I was a little frightened. We never expected it. There was no warning."
