Man regrets drunken damage to car
A 24-year-old tour boat operator was handed a conditional discharge on Friday after pleading guilty to damaging a car while drunk.
Pembroke resident Kevin Fox appeared intoxicated on February 27, when Police officers saw him jumping onto the bonnet of a parked car near the junction of Reid and Parliament streets. Fox climbed onto the top of the car before jumping onto another, then proceeded towards Front Street.
The Police officers saw dents on the bonnet and top of one car, and followed Fox to the Bermuda Bistro at the Beach, arresting him outside.
He was formally charged and cautioned on March 6.
In Magistrates' Court yesterday he entered a guilty plea, telling the court he was sorry for his behaviour.
"It was a very intoxicated night," Fox said, adding that he and his friends were "just skylarking, coming off the hill".
Fox said he had already repaid the $2,015 damages to the car in question, noting that the car's owner had joined him in court to attest to this.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner handed Fox a 12-month conditional discharge, with the provision that he must complete the alcohol abatement programme he started following his arrest.
Fox noted that as a self-employed operator of a tourist boat, he knew he needed to stop drinking as customers had complained of smelling alcohol on his breath the morning after a night of drinking.
