Ten firefighters promoted

Dana Lovell

Ten officers at Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service have been promoted, including Lieutenant Dana Lovell, who was promoted to Divisional Officer.

D.O. Lovell will now head all operational firefighters at the Island's three stations Port Royal, Clearwater and the headquarters in Hamilton.

During his 25 years of service D.O. Lovell has served in various capacities. He is also a graduate member of the Institute of Fire Engineers.

Chief Fire Officer Vincent Hollinsid said yesterday: "I think all of the persons selected for promotion are quite deserving of the position and quite capable of leading the Fire Service into the future. Some of them have taken additional training overseas and locally to further their academic studies and to get additional firefighting training overseas."

According to Mr. Hollinsid, the Service is considering a partnership with a UK-based firefighting school to help more Bermudians reach their potential. They are particularly looking to train officers in high-rise firefighting to better cope with fires in the Island's taller buildings.

Firefighter Alec Swan was promoted to lieutenant after 22 years in the field. He will be stationed at Clearwater as the station commander. Troy Furbert, who was also promoted to lieutenant, will serve as station commander at Port Royal. He has been with the service for 21 years, serving in both the Training and Operations divisions.

Josonne Smith and Aaron Denkins, who have been in the service since 1996, were also promoted to lieutenant. They will continue in the Fire Protection Division where they have worked for the past six years.

Scott Quinn, a 21-year veteran, was promoted to sergeant. He will serve in the Operations Division.

Also promoted to the rank of sergeant were Vance Hassell, Caleb Zuill and Jamal Albouy. Sgts. Hassell and Zuill joined the Service in 1996 and will also work in the Operations Division. Sgt. Albouy has been with the Service since 1999. He will work in the Fire Prevention Division.

Paul Dill, who has been in the Service for 19 years, was promoted to Crew Commander. C.C. Dill will be assigned to the Airport Operations Division.
