Third Avenue residents upset at W&E ruling
Residents of one Pembroke neighbourhood are up in arms after Works and Engineering informed them that garbage collectors would no longer be coming up their road.
Householders on Third Avenue off Shelton Road were sent a letter last week informing them that, because of an 'obstruction' on their street, garbage would only be collected from the main road.
"We got the letter last Monday," said one resident, who asked not to be named. "It said they won't be going down there anymore and that we have to bring all our trash [to Shelton Road] by 7.30 a.m."
It was unclear to the resident why the trucks could not simply reverse on to Third Avenue.
"They back up onto other avenues, I can't see why they can't do it on to ours," he said, adding that many of the streets off Shelton Road were the same width or narrower than his.
"We all pay our taxes, this is absolutely ridiculous."
The new arrangement has proved inconvenient for many in the neighbourhood, and particularly difficult for one woman in her 70s who now must walk the distance of a football field with her garbage.
There is also concern about the mounds of trash bags left at the end of the street, with one resident calling it "an accident waiting to happen".
Representatives from Works and Engineering were unavailable for comment this week.
