Trio imprisoned for five years for home invasion robbery
A trio who bludgeoned a man with a cognac bottle and stole $13,600 worth of items from him during a house raid was yesterday jailed for five years.
Troy Burgess, 21, Detre Ford, 16, and Clarke Fox, 17, were jailed for three years for burglary and five years for wounding 21-year-old Jahdean Gibbons on June 17.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
A 15-year-old boy from Pembroke, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was given two years' probation for his involvement. The teenager, who was sentenced in Youth Court earlier this week, did not take part in the violence. He told a frightened Mr. Gibbons: "Shut up or I'll kill you".
Mr. Gibbons was beaten so badly he lost consciousness. The wound to his head required nine stitches and five staples.
The three admitted stealing $5,000 cash, a gold chain, a gold pendant, a gold and diamond earring, five bracelets, a laptop computer and two PlayStation computer games from the home on Curving Avenue in Pembroke.
They denied committing aggravated burglary while armed with weapons, but admitted less serious charges of straightforward burglary the day their Supreme Court trial was due to begin.
The trio was also accused of wounding Mr. Gibbons during the incident, with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.
They denied this, but pleaded guilty to lesser charges of unlawful wounding.
The three were further charged with conspiring to carry a firearm with criminal intent while Burgess alone was accused of carrying a firearm or imitation firearm with criminal intent. They denied those charges.
In Supreme Court yesterday, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Michael McColm told Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves the prosecution was satisfied with the guilty pleas entered. The rest of the charges were allowed to lie on file.
