Unruly customer at eatery spat at police officer in car

A man who launched an attack on staff at the Ice Queen eatery and then spat at his arresting officer, was jailed for a month yesterday.

Roger Lightbourne Jr pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to threatening behaviour.

The 20-year-old St. George’s resident was jointly charged with Yusef Williams for the November 24 offence.

Williams, of Pembroke, also pleaded guilty. Lightbourne admitted to further charges of assaulting an officer and damaging a police car.

Prosecutor Kirsty-Ann Kiellor said that kitchen staff at the Paget eatery were alerted to a commotion at the front at 9.30pm.

They found Lightbourne standing on the counter, shouting and trying to place an order.

He was told to get down but became more aggressive, going around the counter to argue with the cashier.

Williams then came into the restaurant and was able to forcibly remove his friend, however both men returned.

Lightbourne grabbed and threw part of a cash register along with a plastic container.

He also attempted to punch and kick an Ice Queen employee.

Both men left in a car after making threatening gestures at staff. Police arrived soon after.

Officers later found the pair at Swizzle Inn. Lightbourne screamed “I’m a gangster” as he was placed in the car. He then kicked between the car seats and broke a rear view mirror.

He then called the police officer in the rear seat a “bi**h” and spat in her face.

Yesterday Ms Kiellor said that Lightbourne had convictions from three years ago for threatening behaviour and unlawful assault, for which he had received suspended sentences.

Defence lawyer Craig Attridge said both men had returned to the Island for Thanksgiving break from school overseas.

The lawyer said police had put Lightbourne aggressively into the back of the car.

That, combined with his intoxication, caused him to lash out, Mr Attridge said.

Mr Warner fined both men $300 for threatening behaviour. He fined Lightbourne an additional $500 for willful damage and sentenced him to 30 days’ imprisonment for assaulting an officer.
