Hundreds of people turned up to celebrate the “blood, sweat and tears” of workers on the 30th anniversary of Labour Day.Families headed to Union Square in Hamilton from about 10.30am to hear a host of speakers from the Progressive Labour Party, One Bermuda Alliance and Bermuda Industrial Union. The celebration’s message was ‘sustaining trade unionism’ and the overwhelming message was that Bermuda had to work together to move forward. The crowd of about 200 people clapped and cheered their way through the speeches before about 100 of them took part in the annual Labour Day march.BIU president Chris Furbert, Premier Paula Cox and Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess led the walkers on what was called “a walk through the pages of history”.The group of walkers, which included large numbers of politicians, bus drivers and dockworkers, waved green and white PLP flags from behind a banner which read: ‘Solidarity. Labour is me’.Many of the workers also danced alongside the PHC and Warwick United majorette troupes.Ms Cox said we should never forget the “blood, sweat and tears” of the labour movement’s struggle.OBA leader John Barritt said “the time is here for change”and urged everyone to “question, review and modify the old way of doing things”.Mr Furbert said the BIU aimed to “find a balance” between what its members wanted and the public’s perception. He said: “The BIU executive is not the BIU. The BIU is its members, they make the decisions.”The celebrations continued through the afternoon with entertainment, presentation tents promoting trade unions, and free health screenings.
