CoH tree planting programme kicks into gear

A citywide tree planting and rejuvenation programme is in the works for the City of Hamilton. The move has been in the planning stage for “a few years” and will be completed over the next several months.Said City Secretary Edward Benevides: “We have put a schedule in place, identified areas that need trees added and locations where trees have to be replaced.“City horticulturalists planted and nurtured saplings that are now ready to be transferred. The process includes taking out trees that have become overgrown or may be diseased and replacing them with young trees that are ideal for the location.”Tree guards will be used to protect the young saplings from car doors, he added.Meanwhile, a tree nursery will be developed in Jubilee Park on Parsons Road.Mr Benevides continued: “This public park is an area we have identified as an ideal location to plant, grow and develop trees and will serve two purposes more greenery will be added to the area and it is a perfect location to grow and develop saplings.“Over time we will also introduce fruit trees to city parks. The fruit, once ripe, can be picked and enjoyed by members of the public.”
