Firefighters put out Morgan’s Point blaze

Fire engines were called to Morgan’s Point last night after a controlled burn of waste material wasn’t put out properly.Divisional Officer Dana Lovell, from Bermuda Fire Service, said firefighters who had been dispatched to another call in the West End spotted a glow from across the Sound at about 7.50pm.“A lot of work is being done out there in the redevelopment of that tract of land,” he said. “What was actually on fire was a controlled burning site.“The site had been set aside specifically for the purpose of controlled burns. They’ll take tree trimmings, logs etc and put it in a pile and burn it under the watchful eye of workmen at the site.“For reasons unknown, the fire wasn’t completely out at the end of the day and the wind caught it.”Two fire engines attended and six firefighters quickly got the flames under control, with help from an employee of Nelson Hunt, one of the businessmen developing the site into a tourist resort.
