Burglars take fundraising cash from home of MP Butler

The family home of MP Dale Butler was burgled this week. Thieves made off with $600 of fundraising money.

Burglars broke into Government MP Dale Butler’s home while his stepsons slept and stole $600 collected from a fundraiser.Mr Butler said the incident, which happened in broad daylight on Monday, left him and his family feeling “absolutely horrified”.He explained that the culprits smashed their way in through the back kitchen door sometime between 8.50am, when his wife left the house, and 11am, when he returned home from a training session. The house on Angle Street, Pembroke, is his family homestead.“I grew up in the house and it is the first break-in I have ever had,” he said.“They stole a handful of CDs and approximately $600 in cash raised when we had a bake sale for the band Giant Steps.”Mr Butler explained a fundraising initiative is underway to raise $40,000 to send the band to the Havana Jazz Festival next year. He was about to deposit the money in the bank, but the burglars got there first.“I will personally reimburse the money,” pledged Mr Butler, 59.There was not much damage done, apart from the burglars making a mess by pulling drawers out. However, he is particularly upset that his wife’s sons, aged 26 and 28, who are visiting from the Philippines, were asleep in the house when the burglary occurred.“They are absolutely horrified. My family is very discouraged and over-sensitive about everything now. We had an open home and now it’s made us like Fort Knox,” he said.“It’s left a very funny feeling in all of our mouths.”Plans were already in the pipeline to form a Neighbourhood Watch in the area prior to the break-in, and Mr Butler said he backs the idea. Despite his unfortunate experience, he said the neighbourhood usually only experiences around one burglary a year.He thanked the police for their prompt response in taking fingerprints and statements.Mr Butler said he had “no clue” who the culprits were, and they have yet to be caught.“We just hope the fingerprints reveal something,” he said.A police spokesman said: “Detectives are interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Angle Street area between 8.50am and 11am that day. Any witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Detective Constable Seymour Foote at the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.”
