Non-Mariners celebrate 40 years of mayhem

The Non-Mariners are commemorating 40 continuous years of non-racing at the Sandys Boat Club with an online live stream, more family activities and an extra charitable donation.Sandys Boat Club Commodore Brad Woodings said some older Non-Mariners will attend the event in honour of the 40th anniversary, with some coming in from overseas.Media coverage of the event will make it possible to keep up with the Non-Mariners Race from any location.“We’re going to be doing some live reports on Irie radio,” Mr Woodings said. “We’re going to be live-streaming the event, so wherever you’re sitting or you’re camping you can also come and watch the Non-Mariners.”The organisers have also added a new charitable incentive for entrants. Each float will be able to nominate a charity when they enter, and successful teams in the non-race will have a cash award made to that charity in their name. The Non-Mariners are also taking extra precautions to ensure a safe, environmentally-friendly and fun day.“We’ve been teaming up with KBB and the waste management section to make it a non-litter event,” Mr Woodings said. “We’ve expanded the food court and the stuff for the kids, making it more of a family event.“We have been working in conjunction with Marine and Ports and making everybody aware that from Watford Bridge to Kings Point is a five knot no-wake zone for the day.“We want everybody to be safe on the water and of course, let’s drink responsibly please.”According to the Non-Mariners Race Facebook page, the event began in 1964 by amateur sailors “as a joke against the well-established and prim sailing clubs of Bermuda and their 1960s sailing correctness”.The event originally took place in Hamilton Harbour, but moved around to St George’s and Ferry Reach before settling in Mangrove Bay at Sandys Boat Club in 1972.After more than a decade of involvement with the Non-Mariners Race, Mr Woodings said: “The biggest change is that people have been more and more feeling that it’s easier to take a satirical look at where we are in our life right now and make fun of it in our floats.“Some of the more memorable ones were where people have been taking their own twist with where we are in regards to our national debt.“It’s just an overall fun day to relax after all the cricket and just have a satirical look at ourselves.”In 40 years of non-racing, the festivities have grown to include other non-events such as the non-penguin fly-by, the non-memorial to the mascot and the non-noodle races for all ages. The event’s will start promptly on Sunday at 11.58am and 27 seconds with the non-colours raising.Bruce Barritt will again serve as the non-emcee, and the non-trophy and non-prize giving ceremony will take place at 5.26pm and 56 seconds.Entry forms are available at Sandys Boat Club and online at sandysboatclub.com.Teams can enter right up until the morning of the event. The entry fee is $25 per non-craft, with the proceeds going to the Salvation Army and the Eliza DoLittle Society.
