Wall collapses into woman’s bedroom

A senior was lucky to escape with her life when her neighbour’s retaining wall crashed down in heavy rain and landed on her as she slept in her bed.The 66-year-old Verdmont Valley Drive resident suffered shock and minor injuries in the incident, which occurred just after 2am yesterday.She told The Royal Gazette: “I just heard a crash and a bang. I didn’t know what it was. It knocked my bed forward and I said ‘what the heck.’ My headboard fell down on my head and I scrambled to get out.”The woman, who asked for her name not to be printed, added: “I was a bunch of nerves when I realised what had happened. I had sand all in my hair and it took a little nick out of my leg.”Her daughter, son and daughter’s friend were sleeping elsewhere in the three-bedroom house, but the damage was confined to her bedroom.“I ran into my daughter’s room and jumped into her bed and said ‘help me’. She called 911,” explained the lady. “I am feeling very shaky but I’m glad to be alive.“This can all be fixed. This is one Thanksgiving where I’m very thankful.”The lady said she had concerns when the wall was built “way back when” that it “was not built properly”. She said she alerted the Planning Department to her concerns, but nothing came of it.Firefighters dealt with the aftermath of the incident, and planning officials joined insurance company workers at the home later yesterday to assess the damage.The Royal Gazette asked the Planning Department to comment, but a spokeswoman replied: “The Department of Planning will provide you with a response upon completion of their investigation which is currently still underway.”Fire Service spokesman Lt Dana Lovell it appeared that torrential rain caused the wall to collapse.
