OBA on it’s economic programme: ‘We believe in making commitments when we have full command of the facts’

The Opposition One Bermuda Alliance will reveal the cost of its programmes in the “coming weeks” Shadow Finance Minister Bob Richards said.He characterised as “ridiculous” the Progressive Labour Party’s estimate of its proposal to give employers a payroll tax concession to employers of new Bermudian hires. While the employer would be exempt from paying payroll tax, the employee will not be exempt, he explained.“The net effect is that the government gains revenue that it didn’t have before,” said Mr Richards.“You can’t increase employment and expect government revenues to go down. Our thing works when somebody is hired.“It’s not like the Government situation where they are giving tax exemptions to a sector whether they hire people or fire them.”The PLP has said that the OBA’s proposals, including the payroll tax concession, would cost $500 million.Mr Richards also defended his party’s refusal to commit to not raising the debt ceiling, while promising to lower the debt.He said while the OBA expected to be the next Government, the state of finances could be worse than has been revealed by the PLP Government.“We believe in making commitments when we have full command of the facts and not before,” he said.“The debt will be lowered but it won’t necessarily be the next day.”
