Lengthy session expected today.

Legislators will be up until the early hours of Saturday morning conducting the people’s business in a marathon House of Assembly sitting beginning at 10am this morning.They hope to complete the budget debate and pass 18 pieces of related pieces of legislation and regulations before taking an Easter break.Eight hours will be spent today debating the budget estimates for the Ministries of Economic Development and Finance, and that’s just for starters.Lawmakers will then consider Government’s proposals to raise certain Government fees, reduce license fees for non-Bermudian purchases of Island property, approve $100 million in overspending over the last two years and increase bus and ferry fares.They will also debate additional measures to prevent money laundering, increases in taxes on cigarettes and alcohol and a two percent increase in the corporate services tax.A total of seven pieces of financial regulations and laws before MPs head home at approximately 4am tomorrow morning.Parliamentarians will head back to the hill on Monday morning to deliberate on another six pieces of legislation including the establishment of a new body to help control Government spending and, possibly, an Opposition motion to oppose the reversal on term limits.Monday’s sitting is also expected to be an all nighter.
