The Highland Games are set to return to Bermuda next month with 82 performers representing four overseas groups. And in the build-up to the games, the performers will be highlighted in a series of events across the Island. On June 10, the MacKenzie School of Dance from Halifax will perform at the Beating of the Retreat in Dockyard, while on June 14 performers will join Johnny Barnes for his morning greeting of commuters. The event will launch on June 15 with participants marching from City Hall to Saltus Field at 2.30pm featuring the pipes and drums of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.A spokeswoman for the event said: “This year Bermuda will see the tug o’ war, tossing the caber, the 5K Highland Run and short running races in the arena. The organisers hope to add some of the other events in the coming years.“While most of the events are individually contested, the tug o’ war consists of teams of eight pulling against each other. Invitations to submit competing teams have gone to the four rugby teams, and the police, the fire and rescue service and the Bermuda Regiment and the various corporate sponsors.“And we are delighted to announce that Teacher’s Rugby Club is returning to defend their Tug O’ War Champions title.”The event will also feature a highland dance competition, which will run throughout the day, punctuated by demonstrations from pipers and dancers from Bermuda and overseas.“This is very much a family event, and there will be contests in which members of the public will be invited to participate,” the spokeswoman said. “Among these will be the 50m dash for adults and children. The ‘kilted dash’, for runners wearing kilts, should prove particularly spectacular. So be sure to bring your running shoes with you.”Food and drink, with a distinctly Scottish influence, will be available for purchase at a number of different food stalls, with an extensive ‘kiddie land’ for younger members of the family.Caledonian Society of Bermuda past president Scott Devine said: “The society has worked long and hard to promote all things Scottish in Bermuda and the Highland Games is the ultimate Scottish event.“We look forward to welcoming the entire Island to Saltus Field to sample traditional Scottish food and games, like tossing the caber, tug o’ war, musical displays and highland dancing competitions.”“The day is shaping up to be a great spectacle and lots of fun for the entire family. We hope people will come out and enjoy a great day of fun, games and all things Scottish.”
