Corporate workers give back to the community

Argo staff stepped out of their office to do voluntary work that involved helping restore historic cannons in St George’s.

Delivering meals to the needy, cleaning a charity’s office and sprucing up some historic cannons — it was all in a day’s work for corporate volunteers who gave back to the community earlier this month.

Staff from PwC Bermuda, Argus Group and Argo took part in a community day organised by the Centre on Philanthropy, which described their efforts as “wonderful”.

The PwC volunteers helped out Meals on Wheels, delivering food to 175 clients on May 2, while Argus Group employees helped cancer charity PALS beautify its building.

Argo staff, meanwhile, joined the St George’s Foundation and the Departments of Parks, Planning, and Conservation Services on a cannon conservation project in St George’s.

Sheena Young, PwC executive assistant said staff had thoroughly enjoyed the day, with two volunteers hoping to do similar work again in their own time.

Charlotte Andrews, executive director of the St George’s Foundation, said: “The Argo Team did a fantastic job on all the cannons at the World Heritage Centre, Alexandra Battery, Gates Forts and Ordnance Island.”

Over the past six years, the Centre on Philanthropy has helped organise more than 100 such projects, engaging more than 800 volunteers from 30 companies in Bermuda.

Companies interested in volunteering in the future should e-mail jpitcher@centreonphilanthropy.org.
