A 59-year-old Paget man last night became the second person to be killed on the Island’s roads this year.

The motorcyclist was in a collision with a car on Middle Road, near the junction with Ord Road and Presbyterian Christ Church in Warwick. It appears that the car was travelling east when it collided with the bike, which was heading west.

The windscreen of the car was smashed on the right-hand side, its bodywork was extensively damaged and its right front light was destroyed. Much of the front bumper was also ripped off in the smash.

The bike, which was also badly damaged, was almost under the car on the centre line.

An elderly lady who was in the car was believed to be unhurt but she was taken to the Kind Edward VII Memorial Hospital for what Police termed “light observation”.

Police spokeswoman Mica Murray said that first responders arrived at about 5.55pm.

“He had apparently succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was subsequently pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital,” she said.

Police spokesman Robin Simmons reported at 9.31pm: “The section of Middle Road in Warwick temporarily closed due to tonight’s fatal road collision has since been reopened to normal traffic flow.

“The Bermuda Police Service appreciates the patience and cooperation of the motoring public who were inconvenienced.”

The accident is the fourth on Bermuda’s roads in the past fortnight, and the fifth in the Christmas-New Year period after the deaths of Shawn Williams, 23, on December 21; 19-year-old Stephen Edwards and Timothy Wright, 62, on December 31 and New Year’s Day respectively, and Jeremé Cumbermack last Monday — the latter a matter of a minute’s drive farther east on the same road as last night’s road death.

A family liaison officer has been assigned to the victim’s family to assist them during this difficult time and a full investigation into the collision is under way.

The Bermuda Police Service has appealed for any witnesses to contact PC Walter Jackson of the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011 or via e-mail at wjackson@bps.bm.

No further details were released last night as the next of kin had yet to be notified.

Refrain from reposting graphic image, say Police

A graphic photograph of this evening’s fatal road accident victim at the scene has been posted on social media, and led to a Police call for social media users to stop circulating it.

A Police spokesman said: “It has been brought to the attention of the Police that there is an image in circulation on social media that depicts the recent victim who was involved in the recent road traffic collision.

“The Bermuda Police Service would like for members of the community to refrain from posting the image as it does a disservice to the family and friends of the deceased.

“If you receive the image, please simply delete it immediately and do not pass it on.:

The Police spokesman added: “As of 9:30 this evening next of kin has yet to be notified.”
