Police: Be safe on New Year’s Eve

Public plea: Superintendent Darrin Simons has urged the public not to drink and drive (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Police will be out in force tomorrow night as the Island welcomes in 2016.

Superintendent Darrin Simons noted the series of significant events in the past week including a fatal traffic collision and a shooting, saying: “You can expect to see a highly visible police presence engaging with the community.

“Our intention is to reassure public as well as prevent incidents of antisocial behaviour around the many parties and functions that are planned.

“We will have groups of officers in St Georges and the Hamilton city centre in particular.”

He added that officers will also be present at the New Year’s Day football games in partnership with the Bermuda Football Association, the local sports clubs and their safety staff.

“During this holiday period, we will also be using call takers to process non-emergency calls over the phone,” he added. “We aim to continue to provide a quality service while balancing the need to maintain high numbers of officers patrolling the streets. Be assured, however, that any emergency calls will be met with and emergency response.

Mr Simons called on the public to be careful while driving, urging motorists to follow the speed limit and to avoid drinking and driving.

“I remind the public of one of CADA’s key messages ABCD — Always use bus, cab, or designated driver,” he said. “If you drink, don’t drive. The decisions you make can be life altering and the life you save just might be your own.”

He also noted that traffic in Hamilton will be effected by a block party taking place on Court Street, with road closures coming into effect as early as 6am.

“While attending any of the events please be sure to comply with the instructions of any security staff or police officer; they are there for your safety,” he said.
