A Devonshire man has been sentenced to 30 days in prison after taking a motorcycle without the permission of its owner.

Magistrates’ court heard Omar Young, 43, took the cycle on January 14 and was seen on CCTV camera grabbing the handlebars, breaking its steering lock before pushing it along Cedar Avenue and onto Marsh Folly.

Police approached the man to ask if he needed assistance but became suspicious when they saw he had no helmet and no keys and could not explain why.

The bike was found to have not belonged to Young and was subsequently impounded.

Young explained to magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that he had no job and could not get financial help, before apologising.

Mr Tokunbo offered the defendant a punishment of 18 months probation but he opted to go to jail.

Meanwhile, a Southampton man has been fined $300 for violently resisting arrest.

On December 20, Andrew Browne, 48, was seen driving near Angle Street in Pembroke when officers noticed that his bike registration had expired.

On questioning the man, officers soon discovered that there were two warrants out for his arrest.

The court heard that Browne attempted to drive off and when one of the officers tried to grab the bike they fell and sustained minor injuries.

Browne was said to have struggled violently and resisting arrest.

Browne pleaded guilty to the offence but told Mr Tokunbo that he had not acted violently, claiming that when he started the bike, an officer pulled his arm, causing the bike to go forward. He said is was that that had caused the officer to fall and sustain injury.

Browne said: “I was upset, I did curse and I am guilty. I apologise for my actions.”
