A look back at MP’s accomplished career

A look at some of the notable moments in the legal and political career of Shawn Crockwell:

Mr Crockwell was born on March 30, 1970.

As a child, he attended the Bermuda Institute Seventh-day Adventist School from kindergarten through to Grade 12.

He graduated from Oakwood University, in Alabama, United States, with a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science in 1995.

In February 1996, he was sentenced to ten years in prison for stealing $600,000 worth of heroin from a court safe while working as a Supreme Court clerk.

While incarcerated, he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London in 2000. A postgraduate programme with De Montfort University, in Leicester, England, followed.

He became chairman of the United Bermuda Party following the General Election in 2006.

On December 18, 2007, he won Constituency 19, Pembroke West, beating Progressive Labour Party candidate Walter Brown by 505 votes to 361.

Mr Crockwell along with five other defecting members of the United Bermuda Party founded the Bermuda Democratic Alliance, on November 5, 2009.

He was also Called to the Bar that year.

In May 2011, the BDA merged with the UBP to form the One Bermuda Alliance.

On December 17, 2012, he defeated Charlie Swan in Constituency 31, Southampton West Central, and was named Minister for Tourism Development and Transport by then-Premier Craig Cannonier after the OBA captured 19 of 36 seats in the House of Assembly in the General Election.

Mr Crockwell cited a loss of confidence in the OBA under Michael Dunkley when he quit Cabinet on March 16, 2016. He would later leave the party in July of last year.

Earlier this month, he revealed that he would vote against the Government in a motion of no confidence that was set to take place last Friday. Parliament was dissolved when Mr Dunkley announced on Thursday that the next General Election would be held on July 18.

Most recently, Mr Crockwell was director of litigation at Chancery Legal, practicing civil and criminal litigation.

The practice opened on September 1, 2016, with six lawyers, including Mark Pettingill.

Prior to joining the firm, he was an associate at MJM in the litigation group.

Mr Crockwell also did volunteer work for organisations including the Parent Resource Institute for Drug Education, the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, and YouthNet.

He had also taught GED at the Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist Church, and spent three years running Work Inc, to help ex-convicts return to the workforce.
