Four rescued after rental boat capsizes

Four people left clinging to their rental whaler after it capsized on Saturday were rescued by marine police and private boats.

Multiple distress flare sightings were reported to the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre and marine police in the area off Cambridge Beaches at about 6pm.

“Marine police vessel Heron 2, and private craft Attitude Adjustment and Ocean Gypsy 2 also reported similar sightings with all vessels tasked to the distress position,” the incident report said.

“Upon arrival, Attitude Adjustment discovered four persons in the water, clinging onto a capsized rental whaler. All persons were taken on board with no reported injuries.”

Heron 2 also attended and the rental operator then took the vessel under tow back to Dockyard.

BMOC added: “This incident highlights the need for carrying distress flares on board as a means of alerting other boaters and authorities ashore of your distress situation.

“Follow-up investigations by marine police are ongoing.”
